I must dispose of these peons who spread truth like disease!
~ Chief Blank, Space Channel 5.

Chief Blank is the former CEO of Channel 5 and the secret main antagonist of the first Space Channel 5. His goal is to use TV to brainwash the masses so his channel can get more ratings.

Information[]

Not much is known about Blank besides the fact he is obsessed with ratings. He had been the chief of Channel 5 for quite some time, at least 10 years prior to being replaced. His favorite color is plaid[1] and he loves ratings above everything else. He’s also apparently been watching Ulala’s progress for some time, enough to design a robot after her.

Also he is indirectly responsible for the demise of Ulala's parents as Blank is allegedly responsible for setting up the spaceship accident Ulala was in as a child, in which Ulala's parents were fatal victims.[2]

Appearance[]

Blank is a tall man of above average build. He keeps his head bald and is always seen wearing a pair of pink, frameless sunglasses. In Space Channel 5, these obscure his eyes, but in Part 2, they are translucent. Blank's eyes are small and closely spaced, and are a dull blue in color. He also has a faint triangular goatee.

Blank wears a metallic white top similar to a tailcoat. The neck, sleeves, and bottom of the coat are lined with cobalt blue rimming, and the inside of the coat is fuchsia. This coat also garners the Channel 5 logo on the left side of the chest. His pants are blueish teal and extend directly to his shoes. These shoes are navy blue with gray soles.

Personality[]

Blank appears to not be a very sane person. He will do anything to reach his goal. That includes brainwashing a whole alien species. He also doesn't care about anyone other than himself, as he will hurt anybody who gets in his way, even his own employees.

Blank seems more friendly in the sequel than in the first game, teaching the player nice tips to get a perfect score.

History[]

Report 4: Evil in the Galaxy Revealed!

Blank secretly starts sending a brainwashing signal to the Morolians, ordering them to make people from Earth dance. However he isn't seen or mentioned by anyone until the fourth report, after Jaguar finding out that the brainwashing signal frequency is the same as Channel 5's. Ulala, Jaguar, and Pudding invade the Channel 5 headquarters and find out that he is the one responsible for the Morolians' invasion. Blank first appears at the boardroom, chuckling and watching Ulala free the Morolians in front of him. As soon as she does that, Blank escapes. He is later found again at the control room after Keyboard Grrrls gets rescued. He says he is impressed by how skilled Ulala is, and tells her if she wants to know the truth, she must follow him. Blank runs away again and leaves Hoorg and the remaining brainwashed Morolians to fight her.

Once Ulala defeats the Morolians and goes after him, she reaches the Channel 5's antenna where Blank reveals that he believes truth to be like a disease and that all reporters should share his vision. He sends out “Ultimate Reporter” Evila to defeat Ulala, but the former gets eventually defeated. As a backup plan, he uses Giant Evila to grab the Astrobeat with Fuse still inside it. Ulala, Jaguar, and Pudding start a fight against the mecha where they must shoot at the opposite direction Blank says.

Giant Evila flings a hand at Pudding and then Jaguar, knocking them both away and leaving Ulala to fight alone. The sound system cuts off as the battle continues. This interference makes it impossible for Ulala to stay in the groove, and Ulala is shot off the Astrobeat Jr., left to float in space.

Jaguar saves Ulala, and the reporter is back to finish the battle. Soon, Giant Evila's head lifts off and spins, revealing Blank TV. The CEO then reveals that the reason why he brainwashed was all for the ratings. Blank activates the Blank Dimension, sucking Ulala inside. To defeat him, Ulala will need to shoot at the TV monitors with Blank's face on it and shoot with the rescue beam at the monitors with her face.

With Ulala feeling the rhythm of her chant support, the Blank Dimension is destroyed. Using five television screens to hold himself up, Blank starts one last dance battle against Ulala. Once he gets tired, Fuse tells the crowd to focus all their energy into the station’s antenna to defeat Blank once and for all.

Blank will do his final command. If the player misses it, the antenna will break, the screen will fade in blank and the credits will start rolling. However, if the player copies his command, the antenna will get fully charged and sends Blank into space.

Sometime after this but before Part 2, he disappears, leaving the spot of Channel 5's chief vacant.

Space Channel 5: Part 2[]

Report 4: The End for Space Channel 5?!

In the sequel, Blank is replaced by Space Michael as the Channel 5's chief.

Chief Blank makes a small appearance as a hostage in the Extra Mode version of Report 4, during the shooting segment against the Space Cheerleaders. Once he is rescued, Blank will celebrate along with the other rescued hostages, then will be left behind by Ulala, as she has to rush to the control room because the door was closing.

Trivia[]

  • A concept document, written at an unknown date, reveals concepts for Blank that differ greatly from his final iteration.[3]
    • Blank is described as a 42 year old woman and the CEO of Channel 5. She scouted out the heroine.
    • Her known background is as blank as her name suggests. There are rumors she used to be a legendary reporter in the early days of space channels.
  • An early document for Project D.G., the project that would later become Space Channel 5, reveals several initial concepts for Blank, though most of these are identical to concepts found in the final release.[4]
    • His age is listed as 44 and he is Channel 5's Manager (役員) rather than it's Chief.
    • His personality is identical to the what it is in the final release; obsessed with rating and will do anything to gain them.
    • Like his final incarnation, the spaceship accident that occurred 10 years ago is said to be his doing. He is also said to be brainwashing a singular alien he once encountered by chance, pointing to him being the main, secret antagonist during this point in development as well.
  • When the TV that was brainwashing the Morolians turned on after Ulala defeating the Morolian Monroe, a yellow Space Channel 5 logo made an appearance among the other symbols for a very brief moment. This was likely to show a hint that the Channel 5 broadcasting channel was somehow involved with the Morolians invasion, which later turned out to be true at the end of the Report.
  • Blank is the only main antagonist in the series who wasn't assisted by his minions in his final boss battle.
  • Blank appears in the Playstation 2 version of the Space Channel 5 box art.
  • Blank's favorite color is stated to be plaid. However, plaid is a pattern and not a color.
  • In Space Channel 5: Part 2, Blank is the only non-Morolian without a descriptive profile. As soon as it's unlocked, he gives the player the Auto-Play command, instead of having descriptor of his character.
  • During the development of Space Channel 5: Part 2 Blank was considered to return in with an army of Evila robots.[5] This was soon scrapped however in favor of introducing a new villain into the series.
    • In the Space Channel 5: Part 2's game files, there are unused textures of Blank which would presumably play in monitors of the Kin, Kon and Kan boss battle, as they are stored along the Purge's monitor textures.[6]
