I am the voice of Truth.
~ Jaguar, Space Channel 5.

Jaguar is a main character in the Space Channel 5 series, and a well-known reporter. He is the mysterious man who always pops up on the scene. Declaring him and his team will uncover the truth, Jaguar is usually seen with a Space Pirate or two to back him up in public.

Character Info[]

Jaguar is a handsome leader of the Space Pirate Broadcasting Station, which he also reports for. He is 35 years old during the events of Space Channel 5 and Space Channel: 5 Part 2 and 38 years during the events of Space Channel 5 VR. He was born in 2464. Jaguar is a great advocator of Truth and commands the Space Pirates. His favorite scent is gasoline.[2] As of Space Channel 5 VR, in addition to reporting, also runs a new program called the "Jaguar's Jaggin Jaguar Show" which is exploding in popularity.

Appearance[]

Jaguar has brown skin and blond, wavy hair. His eyes are brown in Space Channel 5 and Space Channel 5 Part 2 but are gold in Space Channel 5 VR. While working for Channel 5, he wore a blue Channel 5 uniform with a white armband and the letter "J" embroidered on the right sleeve.

In Space Channel 5 and Space Channel 5: Part 2, Jaguar wears a black and white Space Pirates Uniform with white gloves and boots. On his head, he wore rounded sunglasses. On the chest of his outfit is the Space Pirates' logo. His helmet is black to match his uniform, and the glass is tinted orange, hiding his face from the outside. On both his helmet and left shoulder is an antenna, presumably worn in place of a headset.

Like most characters, Jaguar wears a propulsion canister on his back. His is silver and overall larger and longer than other characters'.

In Space Channel 5 VR: Kinda Funky News Flash, Jaguar's outfit went through a design change, making his uniform all black with white details and retained his white gloves. He is also given pointed sunglasses with red lens. His antenna is also smaller and a paler silver, zigzagging similarly to the details of his clothes. His hair has become more of a dirty blond color since Part 2, and has become less wavy. He also appears much taller when compared to other returning characters.

Personality[]

A charismatic man, Jaguar holds truth to be one of the most important concepts to life. He is a risk-taker, confident in his abilities and often attempting to investigate sources of evil and mitigate these issues himself. This strive for the truth does get him into trouble sometimes. As with most reporters, he is very competitive and often tries to catch scoops and get information before others, especially the Channel 5 team.

Though cool and charismatic, Jaguar appears to be equally smug and standoffish. However, it is hard to gauge if this is his typical behavior, or his attitude towards Channel 5, as this attitude is only ever directed at Ulala and her crew. Regardless, Pudding describes him as a "dashing" type of guy that's always coming and going like the wind, and always comes to help even if you don't ask for it.[3]

History[]

Early life[]

Space Channel 5 intro cutscene

Jaguar when he worked at Channel 5, saving a young Ulala.

In 2489, Jaguar was a reporter for Space Channel 5 under the code name "Number 7." That same year he was sent to report on a spaceship accident that threw all the passengers into space.[4] There he find and saves a young Ulala, the sole survivor, from floating alone in space, an event that can be seen in the first cutscene of Space Channel 5. As Jaguar holds the young child, he tells her, "You'll be safe now." This event would go on to inspire Ulala to become a reporter. Jaguar was subsequently fired from Channel 5 after determining the spaceship accident was set up by Blank.[5] It is speculated he decided to continue reporting as a Space Pirate to reveal the truth because of this revelation.

Space Channel 5[]

Report 2: Spaceship S.O.S.!
Jaguar first confronts Ulala while she is sleuthing on the Luxury Spacecraft G. Backed up by two large Space Pirates, he declares him and his comrades to be the Voice of Truth and challenges Ulala to a dance battle. If Ulala successfully defeats him, he will commend her on her dance skills. Conversely, Ulala is defeated, he will dismiss her. Regardless of the outcome of this dance battle, Jaguar will leave the scene. As the Morolians flee in their UFOs, the Space Pirates give them chase in their broadcasting ship Bad Tuning, also known as the Rogueship-A-Go-Go. Jaguar teases the Channel 5 crew as him and his crew leave the scene, just before Morolina appears on the Luxury Spacecraft G.

Report 3: Catch the Scoop!
Jaguar and his Space Pirates are seen rushing to the Morolians’ Secret Base on their space boards, far ahead of everyone else. However, just before reaching the entrance, they turn around to hinder Ulala from going any further. Although he fails to stop her, he once again commends her. He and his crew enter the modified asteroid some time after Ulala does. Seeing Ulala struggle, Jaguar offer his assistance in defeating Morolian Monroe, an alien she couldn’t possibly beat herself, by shooting at the dual aliens directly while she takes care of the screens that appear. Ulala shoots out the television that was controlling the Morolians in the boss room, and the base begins to fall apart. As she flees and saves as many Morolians as possible, Jaguar comes over the commlink for Channel 5 and tells them that he’s found out that the brainwashing signal is coming from the same frequency as Channel 5’s.

Report 4: Evil in the Galaxy Revealed!
Jaguar, Ulala, and Pudding, marching into Space Channel 5’s HQ, confront CEO Chief Blank, or at least try to until he teleports away. Jaguar and the girls proceed to head through the station, rescuing Space Michael along the way, until they reach the top where Chief Blank reveals his true personality. Blank cares not for Truth, comparing it to a disease.

Ulala defeats Chief Blank’s “ultimate reporter” Evila, a robotic reporter made in the image of Ulala, with Jaguar and Pudding at her side. Both join Ulala in coming to Fuse’s rescue when Giant Evila grabs the Astrobeat. The huge robot swings a limb at Pudding then Jaguar, leaving Ulala alone. It's not long before Ulala, too, is knocked her platform in front of Giant Evila. Jaguar has his Space Pirates start up a rhythm in acapella to help Ulala get her groove back. While they do that, he floats off of his broadcasting ship and grabs Ulala. Jaguar tells her, "You've done well, Ulala. You'll be safe now," echoing the what he said to her when he rescued her 10 years ago, and returns her to her platform. These words fill Ulala with the confidence to take down Giant Evila. Once the monstrosity of a mecha is beaten, Blank TV appears, a screen with the image of Blank on it, and the CEO announces his motive for brainwashing the masses: ratings.

Jaguar is standing on Bad Tuning when the Blank Dimension is broken and the energy of the crowd charges up Channel 5's satellite as Fuse has directed.

"You're an enemy to truth, and all that is good."

With that final statement, he, Pudding, Ulala, and her entourage repeat Blank's commands of "Chu! Chu! Chu!" right back at him. The satellite fires a brilliant beam of blue dance energy at the station chief's screen and he is sent off into space. He marches alongside Ulala to the end of the galaxy, with friends and former foes alike behind them.

Space Channel 5: Part 2[]

Jaguar is seen in the opening cutscene, investigating Point XX, but disappears in a screen of static after hearing Purge say, “You saw it…", "it" referring to the Ballistic Groove Gun. He is subsequently said to have gone missing but in reality something much different happened to him.

Report 4: The End for Space Channel 5?!
After Shadow’s defeat at Ulala’s dance skills, Jaguar's form can be seen flickering for a moment. Before Ulala can get a good look at him, he teleports away.

Report 5: The Spies Get Revenge!
Losing the Battle of the Bands was just enough for Shadow’s form to flicker again. Purge appears on the screens in the room and makes Jaguar scream in pain as the brainwashing signal takes over him again. Purge then ‘invites” Ulala to play a little game of ‘which one of them doesn’t belong?’. Ulala takes this opportunity to free “the man in search of truth” from Purge’s grip. No longer under the control of the young genius, Jaguar informs Ulala and her friends that Purge has built “a fearsome Ballistic Groove Gun” from all of the satellites that have been stolen. The Milky Way’s in danger and they need to hurry.

Report 6: Purge’s T.V. Special
The elevator Jaguar and the others are on opens up as “the first feature” on the Purge TV Show. He, Ulala, and the rest groove down the steps and across the walkway towards Purge. He and others are carful not to sing nor dance so that they do not further power the Ballistic Groove Gun. Just as they reach him, a invisible wall prevents him, Pine, Pudding, Hoorg, and Space Michael from helping Ulala confront against Purge.

Ulala is temporally defeated by Purge the Great but Jaguar and Ulala's other friends encourage her to continue batting. When Ulala is fully on her feet and ready to dance, he appearances within the Super Ulala Dimension to dance alongside her, off to her right. After Dance Dimension X is broken, he tells Purge: “Strength without love won’t change anything!” He helps ‘chu chu chu’ Purge into deep space, dancing to the end of the galaxy with the rest of the previously captive audience of the Purge TV Show.

RoseCloseUp

"Laced with Jaguar's passion, this rose will never die."

Costume and Item
After clearing Report 5 if the player checks Jaguar's in-game profile, Jaguar will gift Ulala with the Crimson Rose item which Ulala will be able to replace her microphone with. Additionally, there is a Jaguar costume which is unlocked by clearing Report 5 with 100% views.

Space Channel 5 VR: Kinda Funky News Flash![]

Jaguar returns to Space Channel 5 VR: Kinda Funky News Flash! with his uniform getting a new design and with new allies to back him up in the form of three young women, Kell, Bello, and Soon-Soon, collectively known as The Jaguars.

Report 00
Before the tutorial, there's a cutscene showing Jaguar worried about something happening to a type of dancing energy called Groove Moxie from all across the entire Galaxy.

Report 3: Space Pirates Showdown
The report starts by showing Jaguar asking the Jaguars if they are ready to make their move to which they reply, "ready when you are!". Though not seen in person, during the report he commands Bad Tuning from it's interior. Jaguar can be heard yelling when Bad Tuning is shot down.

Report 4: The Final Report
During the twins' struggle to defeat Glitter, just barely defending themselves, Jaguar appears on the scene from Bad Tuning and offers the twins his assistance in rescuing their friends. Thanks to his support, the twins are able to rescue Ulala, Pudding, The Jaguars, 88MAN and Tachibana. Once all of the heroes are rescued, they will all together fight and defeat Glitter, then celebrate their victory by dancing.

Trial Dance
In the Trial Dance, the twins and Ulala face off against in a 100 stage dance battle. Jaguar is the host of this battle for all 100 stages.

Relationships[]

Ulala[]

Ulala is Jaguar's rival in reporting and a person Jaguar both respects and considers a friend. In 2489, when he worked for Channel 5, he saved Ulala's life—something that inspired Ulala to become a reporter for Channel 5 later in life. While Ulala is, for a fact, unaware that Jaguar is the same person that saved her, it is unknown if Jaguar recognizes Ulala as the child he saved.

As rival reporters, Jaguar has a high amount of respect for fellow Ulala, even from their very first encounter; if she out dances him, he will complement her with a "you're not bad at all" before leaving. Likely in part of their shared drive to pursue the truth, Jaguar has no qualms teaming up with Ulala, In fact, he does so more often than not, frequently putting himself on the line to help or support her. In short, even as competitors, Ulala deeply admires him and Jaguar deeply cares about her in return.[6]

Pudding[]

Not much interaction is shown between him and the Channel 42 reporter, but they work together to support Ulala to help save the galaxy. Jaguar's feeling towards her unknown but Pudding thinks he's cool and describes him as irresistible and "dashing."[3]

Kell, Bello, & Soon-Soon[]

The Jaguars are an elite group of Space Pirates. Despite Jaguar's status as leader of the Space Pirates and his own popularity, he sees the Jaguars on an equal level with himself, considering them as comrades-in-arms rather than subordinates.

Trivia[]

  • Jaguar's body was designed by Ken Okazaki and his face was designed by Yumiko Miyabe.[7][8]
    • His face is "based on the image of a 35 year old Takuya Kimura," a popular Japanese icon, as requested by Mineko Okamura.[9][10]
  • A concept document, written at an unknown date, reveals concepts for Jaguar that differ greatly from his final iteration.[11]
    • Jaguar is described as 25 year old woman that currently works as a reporter for Channel 96. Her trademark is her crimson space suit. Her skills are top-notch.
    • She used to be a reporter for Channel 5; however, she was fired due to purposely causing incidents for her to resolve. She seeks revenge on Channel 5 and aims to ruin the heroine's show.
  • An early document for Project D.G., the project that would later become Space Channel 5, reveals several initial concepts for Jaguar.[12]
    • He is described as a humanoid with blue skin, though this text is partially illegible.
    • His backstory is near identical to what it is in Space Channel 5, with little known exceptions. Firstly, it is explicitly said that he worked along side Fuse while at Channel 5. Secondly, he is said to have been blamed for allegedly setting up the spaceship accident that occurred 10 years ago (though in reality, it was Blank's doing).[13]
    • Jaguar works for the Space Pirate Broadcasting, known in the document as Space Pirate Channel 69, but is not their leader at this point in development.
  • Jaguar was the first character to talk in all of the main games and is the first character to appear on screen in both Space Channel 5: Part 2 and Space Channel 5 VR.
  • Jaguar is the fourth oldest character in the Space Channel 5 series, right after Fuse, Tachibana, and Space Michael; Jaguar is 13 years Ulala's senior when it comes to reporting and investigations.
  • Jaguar, Pudding, Tachibana and 88MAN are the only characters who have assisted Ulala fighting every final boss.
  • Jaguar is one of the two major characters in the series who was brainwashed and turned to evil, the other is Hoorg.
  • In the English version of Space Channel 5, Jaguar refers to himself as "Number 7" while rescuing the young Ulala. In some other languages, including the Japanese version, he simply says his name.
  • In a favorite character poll for the Gyun Gyun Book, Jaguar was ranked the second most popular character, tying with Pudding.[14]
  • Jaguar topped several Space Channel 5 related polls in the Japanese Dreamcast Magazine.[15][16]This includes the "male character I'd want as a boyfriend" poll.
  • In the first two games, Jaguar never interacts with any other main character besides Ulala and the villains.
  • In Space Channel 5 and Space Channel 5 VR, he fires tension blast in the shape of a small orange "J." The same orange "J" can be seen in Space Channel 5: Part 2, when shooting the real Shadow with the Hey beam in the "Which One is the Real One."
  • In the first Space Channnel 5 game, Jaguar's animation for "Right" is incorrectly displayed in Report 2, being cut off far too early. It can be seen in full in Report 3.
  • In the English version of Space Channel 5: Part 2's "Which One is the Real One" game, Shadow has an additional set of commands where he speaks with noticeably less aggressiveness, possibly reflecting his true personality as Jaguar.[17] Only the commands "Up" and "Chu" are used in game.
  • In the English version of Space Channel 5: Part 2, Jaguar has an unused line for Report 6. It's Japanese equivalent is used in game when Ulala and the others first speak together while confronting Purge.
  • Space Channel 5: Part 2 is the only game where Jaguar doesn't call any Channel 5 employee "Channel 5".
  • Jaguar's English voice actor from Part 2, Tom Clarke Hill, was the only English voice actor to not be replaced in Space Channel 5 VR: Kinda Funky News Flash!.
  • Besides the twins, Jaguar was the only other main character to not be captured in Space Channel 5 VR. Ironically, he was one of the only two main characters to be captured in the previous game, the other was Space Michael, but the latter was absent from Space Channel 5 VR.
    • Jaguar, Roo and Kie were also the only three main characters who didn't have their Groove Moxie taken by Glitter.
  • In the final battle against Glitter in Space Channel 5 VR, Jaguar is the only character who doesn't mimic Ulala when she says "Chu". Instead of doing the same pose as everyone else, Jaguar will do his signature "Chu" animation". In hard mode, he also use his signature "Right" and "Left" poses rather than copying Ulala.
    • Animations for his signature "Up" and "Down" pose as well as alternate, more forward takes of "Right" and "Left" are within the game's files. However, they go unused along with some other poses that start with his idle.
  • In the game files for Space Channel 5 VR, Jaguar has an unused UI icon. He shares this similarity with the Jaguars.
  • In Space Channel 5 VR, if the player's hand gets close to or touches Jaguar's hips, the controller will vibrate. This is an intentional feature added by the development team and no other character has this feature.[18]
  • In Unity's own measurements, Jaguar's Space Channel 5 VR model is 2.00m (6’ 6.75") tall. This is consistent with how he appears in the game.
  • In Space Channel 5 VR, Jaguar has several unused voice lines, many are associated with the Trial Dance. Oddly, while he has a voice line for saying "Kell" in Japanese, he does not have an equivalent line in English.
  • Jaguar appears in Project X Zone 2 as Shadow. In the game, he is fighting off being brainwashed and is able to occasionally break through, though not for very long.
