Get your coverage from Channel 42! Good evening, everybody! It’s me, Pudding!
~ Pudding, Space Channel 5: Part 2.

Pudding is a main character in the Space Channel 5 series. A news reporter and actress for Channel 42, Pudding is the haughty and ever-persistent rival of Channel 5's Ulala.

When it comes to reporting, Pudding is a formidable foe; she's determined to always come out on top, be it outshining the competition or being the first one to a scoop. She's usually seen backed up by her loyal bodyguards. Despite her competitive spirit and ever-growing ego, Pudding will put her rivalry on hold if it means saving the Milky-Way.

Character Info[]

Pudding first started out as a very well known teen idol in her youth, and slowly grew into a famous reporter, who landed a job at Channel 42.[1][2] Since then, she has dedicated her profession to growing Channel 42's fame and popularity, becoming the channel's lead reporter. She can usually be seen with her groupie bodyguards—though said "fan club" has waned considerably.[1] She eventually encountered Ulala and declared their infamous rivalry.

Her catchphrase is "It's me, Pudding!" Her favorite color is taupe. She was born on September 5, 2480, making her a Virgo[1], and her blood type is AB.[2] As of Space Channel 5 VR, Pudding has also stepped into the world of acting in addition to her work as a reporter.

Appearance[]

Pudding is a pale skin woman with light blue eyes and long green hair in small braids. In all iterations, her braids are pulled into a ponytail, tied by a thick blue band. Unlike her hair, her eyebrows are blue. In terms of makeup, she wears blue eyeshadow and light pink lipstick. She has a pink tattoo of the Channel 42's logo on the left side of her chest.

In Space Channel 5, she wears a short sleeveless, strapless blue dress. This dress has a noticeable shine to it and has rings accenting the chest of it. She wears white thigh-high boots with blue soles and white opera gloves. Her outfit is completed by with a blue choker and a blue pair of headphones. Her appearances in Superstars Tennis, and Sonic and All-Stars Racing: Transformed use this design.

In Part 2 Pudding wears a spaghetti strap crop top and miniskirt, both of which are blue. Her boots are shortened to knee height and have dark blue soles, accented with black fishnets. Her choker is now metallic silver, and her gloves are elbow length, but her headset remains the same. She wears this same outfit in Space Channel 5 VR.

As with most characters, Pudding wears a set of propulsion canisters along with her outfit, which are blue in most games, but pale silver in VR. Her Tension Blasters are identical in design to Ulala's, except that they are green instead of blue.

Personality[]

Pudding typically presents herself idealistically, putting on a cute, “fluffy” outward persona for the camera. In reality, Pudding is an arrogant and deeply competitive person. She’s always trying to outdo everyone at everything, be it dancing or simply being the first person to arrive on the scene. If she sees someone as a threat, she won’t hesitate to take them down head on in a duel. Pudding engages in competitive behavior even in areas she is woefully unqualified. As an example, she challenges Ulala to a guitar duel despite having to rely on a pre-recorded track due to her lack of experience with the instrument.[3]

Pudding has a slightly immature, spoiled side to her. For instance, she’ll gloat and lightly mock Ulala if she’s performing well but will throw a fit if she’s losing. Pudding also has a propensity for mischief; though Pudding is on friendlier terms with Ulala when outside the realms of reporting, she still enjoys playing pranks on her as "revenge."[4] Even so, Pudding is not a malicious nor completely self-centered individual. If there is a threat she can’t deal with alone, she’ll lend a helping hand and put her trust into others. Even if it means Ulala needs to take the spotlight.

History[]

Early life[]

In her youth, Pudding was a teen idol for many years. In 2495, she became a reporter for Channel 42. The channel would hire long time fans of hers to serve as her “bodyguards” while on the air. Because of her popularity and fame, Pudding has attracted a comedienne impersonator known as Padding.

Pudding and Ulala's dance battle

Report 1: Introducing...Ulala!
Pudding makes her first appearance in the game as a boss in Space Channel 5. In Report 1, Pudding arrives at Spaceport 9 with her bodyguards and a hypnotized Rocka Billy, and introduces herself to Ulala and Channel 5 by taking part in a dance battle. If failed, Pudding will leave Ulala with her henchmen and continue on. If won, Pudding will yell “Retreat!” and take off with only her bodyguards, but Rocka Billy will join Ulala.

Report 3: Catch the Scoop!
Pudding, alongside other reporters (including 88MAN), attempt to beat Ulala to the Morolian secret base located within the Asteroid Belt. Pudding uses her pink variant of her hovercraft, the Spacebird 42. After Ulala either beats or fails against Jaguar and the Space Pirates, Pudding makes it inside the secret base, beating Ulala to the scoop. Inside, Pudding is kidnapped and hypnotized by Morolians and forced to dance. To help, Ulala makes an attempt to save Pudding from the aliens. If Ulala saves Pudding, she will fly away and shout “Thanks, anyway...” If failed, Pudding is taken away by the Morolians, and eventually escapes later on.

Report 4: Evil in the Galaxy Revealed!
Pudding joins Jaguar and Ulala to stop Chief Blank after finding out the Morolians themselves were being hypnotized. Pudding helps to save the Morolians alongside the other two, and helps track down Blank to make sure he doesn’t take over the galaxy. On their way, she helps to save Space Michael and Hoorg from hypnosis, and eventually takes the elevator up and is confronted by Blank’s newest robot creation, Evila, a mimic of Ulala. Pudding helps Ulala by assisting in a dance battle against the robot.

Shortly after, Blank reveals himself after he is seen controlling Giant Evila, and each three take flight on their hovercrafts and attempt to stop Blank. Not long after, Blank knocks Pudding into deep space. At the end of the report, Pudding returns with many other people across the galaxy to watch Ulala take on Blank in the Blank Dimension, and tells her to hold on. Afterwards, Ulala and Blank return to the real world, and Pudding helps Ulala to take on Blank. Near the end, Pudding confronts Blank and exclaims she felt use. Using dance power, she takes out Blank with the others, and helps Ulala lead the march to the end of the galaxy.

Space Channel 5: Part 2[]

Report 2: Nature's Revenge!
uring her attempt to save President Peace, Ulala is interrupted by Pudding and her bodyguards at Fountain Square. Pudding has taken on a new role as a guitarist and invites Ulala into taking part in a guitar battle. If Ulala wins, Pudding will storm off the stage with both bodyguards, and Ulala will cheer in surprise, while also strumming her guitar. If failed, Pudding will tell Ulala it was too easy, and will leave quickly, leaving Ulala in despair and silence.

Report 3: Meet the Sexy Space Police!
Over the news, Pudding hears of the President Peace ransom held by Purge and attempts to get to the scoop.

Pudding dashes past all of the other reporters, shouting “The scoop is mine!” Before boosting away, she waves to Ulala and attempts to reach President Peace before anyone else, not realizing that the ransom is a trap presented by Purge to steal antennas from multiple channel broadcasting stations across the galaxy.

Report 4: The End for Space Channel 5?!
Eventually, the Channel 42 antenna is stolen by Purge, and Pudding can be seen on the news, holding her arms up to her face in a frozen image.

Pine sends out a broadcast asking for help at the end of the report, and gets the attention of Pudding.

Report 5: The Spies Get Revenge!
Pudding shows up in what appears to be a secret lair. Ulala and Space Michael notice Pudding behind them, and she explains that she and her crew heard Pine’s broadcast, and laughs. Startled by him, Pudding quickly turns around to notice Hoorg is present. The reporters continue to sneak though the lair before noticing Pine, who tells them her reading on Purge and the President points in a certain direction. Shortly after, the alarm goes off, and the reporters are caught. They quickly dance though obstacles before escaping the trap.

Shortly after, they fall though a secret door and are surrounded by loads of Rhythm Robots. Pudding and the others quickly take out their chu beams and prepare to attack. After defeating them, they continue on and discover a bright white room, where Shadow immediately appears with a band of BuffBots. While the others prepare their musical instruments, Pudding pulls out her guitar, and they take part in a instrumental battle.

After they defeat them, Pudding notices Shadow is Jaguar, and watches as Ulala tries to save him. After rescuing the reporter, Jaguar tells them that Purge is using the antennas for his own TV show (The Purge TV Show). Pudding and the others then take the hovercraft up to the stadium.

Report 6: Purge’s T.V. Special
Pudding and the others notice Purge and the antennas. Pudding acknowledges that the antennas are used to suck of the dance energy from the audience of “fans” that were kidnapped. Purge then confesses that he will make the whole galaxy dance, and Pudding and the others attempt to take down the Rhythm Rogues. After beating them, Pudding, Pine, Hoorg, Space Michael, and Jaguar are blocked off by an invisible wall, while Ulala is able to go on and confront Purge.

Later, while Ulala’s unconscious, Pudding and Pine are the first two to help Ulala regain consciousness. Eventually, Ulala awakes, and Pudding and several of Ulala’s allies attempt to dance and stop Purge from taking over the galaxy with his new mechanics. In the end, Pudding helps Ulala dance and sing, which helps to get rid of Purge from the galaxy. Pudding, after saving the galaxy, helps to lead the march to the end of the galaxy once again.

Space Channel 5 VR: Kinda Funky News Flash![]

Pudding is a minor character in Space Channel 5 VR: Kinda Funky News Flash!. Pudding first makes a cameo during the third report, Space Pirates Showdown, where she is seen riding her space vehicle along with 88MAN and Shinichiro Tachibana. She looks and waves at the player then flies away with the other two reports. She is later captured off screen by Glitter.

In The Final Report, Pudding appears as a hostage of Glitter along with Ulala, The Jaguars (Kell, Bello and Soon-Soon), Tachibana and 88MAN. She is eventually saved by the Jaguar and the player, then she joins forces with them to save Ulala and defeat Glitter. After Glitter's defeat, Pudding and the rest of the heroes celebrate by dancing. Later, the credit sequence will eventually cut to Pudding who will fist bump the player.

Trial Dance
Pudding appears in the Trial Dance mini game to assist Jaguar in the Dance Battle against Ulala and the Twins. She appears when the player achieves 14% views and is defeated by achieving 24% views. When Pudding is defeated, she joins Ulala and the player and starts assisting them in the battle against Jaguar.

Costume
A Pudding costume for Ulala is available for download in the Hatsune Miku DLC.

Relationships[]

Ulala
Ulala is Pudding's biggest rival. Pudding often challenges and attempts to best Ulala during their chases to the same scoop. Being prideful, Pudding has difficulty expressing her true feelings and thus tends to act ungrateful of Ulala's help in the moment. In the end, she does appreciate Ulala's help.[5] They have a more friendly relationship when they're not reporting, being able to open up to each other about personal details of their life.[5] Pudding seems to know quite a lot about Ulala; she proclaims that she knows all of Ulala’s weakness just to be prepared for any fights against her.[4] Pudding also enjoys teasing Ulala, whether it be potential first crushes or Ulala's lack of tolerance towards spicy foods.

Jaguar
Naturally as reporters for different stations, Pudding and Jaguar are rivals in reporting and can be seen completing to get to the same scoop. Much like with Ulala, they are willing to work together when the time comes. Pudding thinks he's "really cool" and a "dashing" heroic type.[4] Additionally, she likes Jaguar's appearance and behavior quite a lot and people like him are her "type".[4][6] However, she hasn't developed any romantic feeling towards Jaguar himself.[6][7]

Pudding knows a lot of rumor surrounding Jaguar and has pieced together that he is mostly likely the same reporter that saved Ulala when she was a child.[5][4]

Other Appearances[]

Sega Superstars Tennis[]

Pudding playing tennis

Pudding in Sega Superstars Tennis.

Pudding is currently the only Space Channel 5 character besides Ulala to ever be playable in the Sega Superstar series, making her debut in Sega Superstars Tennis as an unlockable character.

Pudding is a control character, like Ulala and Alex Kidd, meaning that she has more control over the trajectory of the ball while rallying and serving.

Her Superstar move is called "Pudding's Rockin' Show", where a cutscene will play showing her playing her guitar. Pudding will then change outfits (Pudding appears wearing her outfit from the first game, but will change to the one from the second game when activating the Superstar move) and will be able to shoot the ball with more strength. The ball also travels in a blockish wave, with the intent of disorienting the opponent.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed[]

Pudding is an unlockable character who can be bought with 50 stars in World Tour (64 stars on the 3DS). She is also one of the only two playable Space Channel 5 characters, the other being Ulala.

Pudding (Sonic Transformed)

Pudding in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.

Pudding's vehicle is based on the green variant of the Spacebird 42, either being a replica of the vehicle or an upgraded version. As a car, it has blue wheels with yellow writing that includes the Space Channel 5 logo, as well as reading Channel 42. As a plane, it looks almost similar to its original, although Pudding is sitting inside it. As a boat, it almost looks like the plane variant, only that the bottom of the vehicle curves upwards, not downwards.

To unlock Pudding, the player must beat her sprint in Twilight Engine, only having three chances. Once beaten, if the player has the right amount of currency, will be able to purchase Pudding afterwards. Her All-Star Move plays "Guitar Showdown" from Space Channel 5: Part 2, the music from her guitar causing those nearby to fly off track or crash into nearby walls and obstacles, causing her opponents to slow down drastically. In the game, her lines are taken from Sumalee Montano’s archive recordings from the first Space Channel 5. She also uses some of Apollo Smile’s as well.

Trivia[]

  • Pudding was designed by Yumiko Miyabe.[8]
  • Pudding, Jaguar, Shinichiro Tachibana and 88MAN are the only characters who have assisted Ulala fighting every final boss.
  • Pudding, Ulala, and Hoorg always hold their microphones with their left hand, indicating they maybe left-handed. Though in Sega Superstars Tennis, both Pudding and Ulala hold their tennis rackets with their right hand.
  • The name of Pudding's report show is never stated in game, however, in Space Channel 5 Part 2 Moji Moji ☆ Can't Stop Remix's Short Program 05, Pudding introduces her report show as "Purin! Puri Puri Report Show!" though this may simply be a gag created for the short.
    • Sega Superstars Tennis shows Pudding using a special move called "Pudding's Rockin' Show", but it is still unclear if it is the actual name of her show.
Ulala Pudding Down animation

Ulala's demo "Down" animation (left) and Pudding's "Down" animation (right).

  • In the first game, Pudding's "Down" animation is Ulala's "Down" animation from the demo version of the game.[9]
  • In Space Channel 5, during the first section of Report 3, Pudding has a different voice clip for when Ulala attacks her with the B Button Beam; she will say "yes!" instead of yelling.
  • In the Report 3 from the first game, it is impossible to not rescue Pudding in the dance battle against the Morolians keeping her as a hostage at the Morolian Base, as there are more hearts than moves in that battle.
  • Pudding's voice actress from the first game, Sumalee Montano, was replaced with Larissa Murray in the second game, only to be brought back to voice her from Sega Superstars Tennis to Sonic & All-Stars Racing: Transformed, making her the only voice actress to be replaced and later return.
    • Similarly, Pudding's voice clips in Sega Superstars Tennis are voiced by both Sumalee Montano (serving and rallying) and Larissa Murray (scoring points, getting outs, using her All-Star move, winning, and losing) with assorted exerting sounds lifted from Ulala (rallying).
  • Aside from Ulala, Evila and Pudding are the only returning characters with a different outfit in the second game.
    • Additionally, she rides a completely different spaceship in the sequel. The first one was a pink spaceship with a big 42 on it equipped with a capsule to protect her from the space. The second one seems to be based one the first, but in a more space motorcycle-like design. Its color was also changed to green.
  • In the English version of Space Channel 5: Part 2, Pudding has an unused line for Report 6. It's Japanese equivalent is used in game when Ulala and the others first speak together while confronting Purge.
  • In the Sugoku Sugoi Guide Book, Pudding admits to not having any experience with playing the guitar and orders her bodyguards to start the "guitar karaoke" before she challenges Ulala in Report 2.[3]
    • Playing off of that, during the track "Pudding's Secret Plan" from Space Channel 5: Part 2 Soundtrack Vol. Chu!!, Pudding says to her bodyguards, "Doesn't it look like I'm playing?" further indicating she is not actually playing the guitar in Report 2.
  • In the Space Channel 5 Part 2 Moji Moji ☆ Can't Stop Remix bonus album, there are two tracks named Short Program 05 - Pudding's Report Show [1] & Ulala's Report Show [Kansai Edition 2] and Short Program 09 - Pudding's Report Show [2] (Drama), which are comical parodies of Ulala's Swingin' Report Show involving Pudding saving a Space Elephant Mistress instead of the actual Space Bird Mistress or Pudding overusing her deadly "Pudding Beam" against Shadow instead of copying his moves.
  • In early footage of Space Channel 5 VR: Kinda Funky News Flash! from 2016, Ulala can find Pudding being forced to dance by the Morolians alongside Pine in the Spaceport 9. However, this never happens in the final version of the game.[10]
  • Space Channel 5 VR is the first game to not have a battle against Pudding and is the first game where Pudding doesn't appear along with her Henchmen.
  • In Space Channel 5 VR, even if the game is set to the English audio, Pudding will say commands with her Japanese voice.
  • In a favorite character poll for the Gyun Gyun Book, Pudding was ranked the second most popular character, tying with Jaguar.[11]
  • In the Sega Superstars series, Pudding usually appears wearing her outfit from the first game, unlike Ulala, who usually appears wearing her Space Channel 5: Part 2 outfit.
  • In Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, Larissa Murray did not give Sega or Sumo Digital permission to use her archived voice clips from Space Channel 5: Part 2 in the game.
    • As a result, Sumo Digital and Sega opted for use of Sumalee Montano's voice clips, even though there was limited dialogue of the character. This resulted in the development team using some of Apollo Smile's voice clips from the first game as a substitute for Pudding.
