Gameplay[]
Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing is an item-reliant racing game, similar in concept and controls to Nintendo's Mario Kart series. As its name implies, it features many playable characters from the Sonic franchise, but also many representatives of other SEGA series. The game has many different modes, of which are:
Single Race: The player chooses a character and a track to play on. The amount of laps can be changed, ranging from 1 to 9, and computer difficulty from Beginner to Expert. In addition, stage hazards, items, and All-Star moves can be toggled in this mode.
Grand Prix: The player must complete a set of four races in a row, and gain points based on their placing on each track. The person with the highest amount by the end wins. Settings cannot be changed in this mode, and therefore it uses items, All-Stars, and 3 laps per race. However, the difficulty of computers can be changed.
Mission Mode: The game features many different missions, employing different game aspects such as drifting control, avoiding hazards, overcoming an opponent within a given time limit, etc. This mode uses a letter grade system, dependent on how well the player does. The highest possible grade a player can get is AAA for any mission. No settings can be changed for this mode, and the character the player uses is dependent on the mission chosen.
Time Trials: The player races by themselves on a single track. The objective is to get the fastest time as possible. Each track also has a staff ghost (a translucent overlay of a staff member racing on the course) that the game challenges the player to best. The player can do as many laps as they want in this mode, and gain SEGA Miles based on how many they did and how well they drive.
Test Drive: The Test Drive acts as the game's tutorial, but isn't necessary to complete. The player doesn't have the option to select a character or stage. The mode requires one to play as Sonic, and for the stage to be Whale Lagoon. There are no computers, so the focus is to learn the controls and get a better feel of the game.
