Not to be confused with the real life person and musician, Michael Jackson.

Space Michael is a featured article, which means it is considered to be one of the best articles in the Space Channel 5 Wiki.

Ulala, let's go! Let’s shout!
~ Space Michael, Space Channel 5: Part 2.

Chief Space Michael is a major character and the overall tritagonist in the Space Channel 5 series who made his first major appearance in Space Channel 5: Part 2. He was a 500 year-old reporter for Channel 5, who later took the position of Chief after Blank. Space Michael liked to dance and sing, and was in close relations with Ulala, a fellow reporter for Channel 5.

Before Purge was defeated, Space Michael and Channel 5 headquarters were under attack, and he was hypnotized by Shadow in the process. After she saved him, Space Michael teamed up with Ulala, Pudding and several others to put an end to his obsession with ratings and fame, and ultimately was one of the heroes who saved the Galaxy.

With the death of Michael Jackson in 2009, Sega presumably retired the Space Michael character out of respect, and limited his appearance in their media, including the Space Channel 5 series. It is unknown what Space Michael’s current living status is.

Character Info[]

Space Michael is Michael Jackson himself, nearly 500 years in the future. In 1999, he prevented a crisis that would've led to the Earth's destruction.[2] In the English version, this is referred to as an alien invasion.[3] The crisis being alluded to is actually referring to the events of the game Michael Jackson's Moonwalker.[4]

During Space Channel 5, Space Michael works as a reporter for Channel 5 under an exclusivity contract.[5] He reports for the show "Star News Station" but also host a variety of other shows for Channel 5.[6] In the sequel, he becomes the new chief of the broadcasting station.[7]

Appearance[]

Space Michael is Michael Jackson himself, and still looks as he did in 1999. He wears a full-body, one-piece suit that is metallic silver in color, with the Channel 5 logo on the chest. This suit cuts off at the hands and feet. Unlike many of the other main characters, he does not wear gloves of any sort. His shoes are white, with silver and black soles. Lastly, he wears a blue armband with a white 5 on it, and a pair of silver propulsion canisters on his back. Similarly, his guns are also silver, and identical in design to Ulala's.

Personality[]

Space Michael is a caring soul who does his best to keep the crew of Channel 5 safe. He will dance and sing against evil-doers to protect those around him, even if Channel 5 studios were to crumble around him. His personality in game is limited by his screen time, but it would presumably be the same as his real-life counterpart.

History[]

Space Channel 5[]

Report 4: Evil in the Galaxy Revealed!
Space Michael appears as a hostage of two Morolians in the fourth report, where Ulala will need to copy the moves from the Morolians keeping him with them. After being saved, he joins the main heroes and later appears at the end of the game, marching to the end of the galaxy.

In the Extra Mode version of the Report, Space Michael will only appear if the amount of views Ulala has as she leaves the boardroom is above 89%. Otherwise, Ulala will find three Channel 5 Policebots replacing Space Michael.[8]

As stated above, Space Michael was a last minute addition to the game, hence why he didn't have a bigger role.

Space Channel 5: Part 2[]

After the fiasco with Chief Blank, Space Michael was the first choice for the new Space Channel 5 Station Chief.

Report 3: Meet the Sexy Space Police!
Space Michael first appears at the end of the third report. After Ulala defeating the Space Police, she and the rest of the Space Channel 5 crew receive an emergency transmission from Space Michael, who reveals that Robots are attacking the station. He orders for everyone to fall back immediately when transmission suddenly cuts off abruptly.

Report 4: The End for Space Channel 5?!
At the beginning of the level, he is able to send another message to Ulala which is immediately cut off, saying “Ulala, no way! He’s com-”. He is later found at the Channel 5's control Room under the control of the Rhythm Rogues. He orders Ulala to run away saying it's a trap, but the Shadow and the Rhythm Rogues appear to fight against her in a dance battle. Once Ulala defeats them, Space Michael is freed. He and Ulala dance on the elevator heading into the station’s core.

In the Core, Space Michael and Ulala are attacked by Purge on his hovercraft and the Peace Carrier. Space Michael assists Ulala on defeating both. Purge then, fuses his Hovercraft with the Peace Carrier, creating Purge the King. Ulala and Space Michael starts a sing battle against the mecha, where Ulala does the "Chu" and "Hey" commands while Space Michael covers the singing parts. When the battle ends, Purge escapes and the Channel 5 Headquarters start to self destruct. Space Michael orders everybody to run to save their lives and later runs away too.

Report 5: The Spies Get Revenge!
Space Michael sneaks into Purge’s Mystery Zone along with Ulala. They are joined by Pudding, Hoorg, and Pine along the way when suddenly, the alarms go off in the space station. They run into a trap where they'll need to copy the robot's moves. Once they escape from it, they are surprised by another trap that drops them into a pit filled with Dark Rhythm Robots. Surrounded, everyone takes up a a direction with Space Michael covering the upper part of the room.

After finally escaping the trap, the group encounters Shadow, who challenges them to a Battle of Bands, and Space Michael takes up the position as singer for their side.

Report 6: Purge’s T.V. Special
Space Michael and the group invade Purge's TV Show. While going down the stairs, the group faces Mass-produced Peace Carriers and Purge's bodyguards. However, when they reach Purge, Space Michael is stopped by an invisible wall and is left behind along with Pudding, Jaguar, Hoorg and Pine.

During the second half of the report, Space Michael calls out to Ulala, encouraging her to continue dancing against Purge the Great. Space Michael also brings with him many of the characters from previous reports, to back Ulala up. When Ulala wakes up and starts fighting Purge again, Space Michael re-appears and assists her along with the rest of the heroes at defeating Purge and freeing Peace.

Dance Dimension X finally shatters and Space Michael can be seen standing next to Jaguar. With Fuse back on the scene, a final blast of collective dance energy is aimed at Purge which results with him being trapped in a giant 'P', shot off into deep space. As Ulala wraps up her last report and everyone celebrates, Space Michael can be seen moonwalking to Ulala's right. The level ends with Space Michael, along with everyone else marching to the end of the galaxy.

Character Creation[]

When the first game was nearly complete, the game's American executive producer showed Space Channel 5 to Michael Jackson, who liked the game so much, to the point he asked for Sega if they could add himself in the game. Granting his wish, this character was created; though due to the character being a last minute addition to the first game, he simply makes a brief appearance.[9]

  • Space Michael was heavily featured in the Space Channel 5: Part 2 trailer.
    • The trailer implies that Space Michael is the deuteragonist of Space Channel 5:Part 2, as the trailer portrays Ulala and Space Michael as the game main heroes.
  • As it was expected, Space Michael is completely absent in Space Channel 5 VR: Kinda Funky News Flash!. The obvious reason is due to Michael Jackson's passing away in 2009, 11 years before the game.
  • Space Michael doesn't have a Japanese voice actor. Instead, he speaks English with Japanese subtitles in the Japanese version of the games.
    • Curiously, Space Michael is the opposite of Hatsune Miku in this aspect, as Hatsune Miku doesn't have an English voice actress and she speaks Japanese with English subtitles in the English version of Space Channel 5 VR.
  • Despite having no significant role in the first game, Space Michael's profile is listed along with the rest of the main character's.
  • In the first game credits, there's a "thanks!" written next to Michael Jackson's name in the voice credits.
  • Space Michael's outfit design is likely based on his outfit from his 1995 song, 'Scream.'
  • Space Michael is one of the three rescuable characters from the first game who have an unique walking animation, yet aren't listed as a Danceling nor Musicians. The other two are Barry Plebio and Jodie Bundt.
  • Space Michael is one of the two characters in the first game who has an unique walking animation which is not only mimicked by the other rescued hostages, but also by Ulala herself. The other is Xiao Xing Lum.
  • It is possible to make Space Michael smile in his Space Channel 5: Part 2 profile, like some other characters. However, it is impossible to see his face while smiling because of the pose he takes.
    • It is possible to see his smile in the game. However, one has to wear the Space Michael costume in Report 4, and rescue the Cheerleaders. While they do their final cheer, he will be smiling.
  • Space Michael pronounces Ulala's name as 'You-lah-lah', which is considered to be incorrect. It is possibly a fun charm Michael Jackson added to his character after he got a bigger role in the sequel, because in his brief cameo in the first game, he pronounced Ulala correctly.
  • Storyboards reveals that Space Michael was not planned to appear in the Report 6 of Part 2, as Ulala was just seen with Pudding, Pine, Jaguar and Hoorg, though the latter appears more like a normal Morolian in the first few panels.[12]
  • Space Michael and Hoorg were the only major characters who didn't say something to Purge before the latter gets launched into space.
    • This is likely due to the fact that they originally weren't planned to be in Report 6
  • In both games, he makes some Michael Jackson's famous dance moves such as Beat It, Thriller and Billie Jean.
    • Space Michael also does Michael Jackson's famous scream many times in both games.
